Hi! I just google-dumped into your blog, and saw that you have connections to Norway and Jaeren. Excuse me for intruding.
ReplyDeleteI heard earlier today of your possibly distant relative, Salve Andersson Kvarme. As you probably know, he served in the danish-norse navy during the Napoleon wars. In the Mediterranean sea he was captured by pirates. He escaped, luckily, and was sent home to Christiania, Norway. He walked all the way from there to Ogna-about 600 km.
Being thankful for his escape from the pirates he decided to donate a ship model to hang in the church in Ogna. The ship was a copy of a common warship from that time.
The church in Ogna was seriously damaged by fire in 1991. The ship was rescued, but needed restoration.
The restoration was done by Karsten Åsland, an elderly gentleman from Klepp. I met him today, at the reopening of yet another medieval churh at Jæren, Orre gamle (old) kirke in Klepp. It originates from about 1250. This church also has a beautiful ship model hanging, made by the same Karsten Åsland. No big deal, you could say, but, shaking hands with the man you will notice that he only has one arm-the left! It was strong-a real farmer’s hand.
The ship in the Orre church is a copy of a common trade ship in that area in 1857, Ørnen (The Eagle). It’s a sailing ship, a schooner.
Well, that’s my little story, thought it might be interesting for you, too!
